The idea for Street Feast is simple- gather your neighbours and enjoy a meal together. But it doesn’t have to end there.. We’ve heard stories from communities across the country about how their Street Feast sparked ideas for exciting projects & events in their area. We’ve got a few for you:
Screen a Film
Who doesn’t enjoy watching a classic on a big screen while curled up munching popcorn? You could organise a film screening at the local school, church, community centre or even outside on the green. Choose to screen a recent blockbuster or go for an old classic and embrace a theme, like ‘Star Wars’ and encourage the neighbours to come in fancy dress.
Start a Community Garden Project
Is there a green space in your community that has seen better days, why not gather some neighbours to restore it to its former glory? Digging out weeds, picking litter and planting flowers will transform it into something for all to enjoy and encourage people to take an active part in caring for their local area. Community garden projects can bring about massive positive impacts. They encourage local involvement and build a greater feeling of community. These connections help reduce crime, empower residents and allow residents to feel safe in their neighbourhood
Make a Free Wee Library
Build some Free Wee Libraries and put them in different spots around your town- in the local park, on the beech walk, in the playground. The idea is that if you take a book you leave a book. Not only will this project help to build community spirit & instil a sense of pride for the area, it’s also a clever way of enhancing & complementing public spaces. Oh.. and it will also encourage people to read which has huge benefits like encouraging positive mental health, education and general well being. What is there to lose?
Start a Farmers Market
Whether you get some local farmers, caterers or local food shops together, this is a great way to highlight the local produce and local sellers in the area. Markets are fantastic places to socialise. Hear the neighbourhood gossip while picking out tomatoes that were grown just down the road from you!
